Cholera Characters

These are the characters that will show you around the website, but we thought you’d like to get to know them before we start.

Bacteria

Hello, I am cholera bacteria. I have been around for centuries but I particularly enjoyed the 19th century as there were no flushing toilets or sewers. I love living in dirty and infected waters. People then drink me and then the fun begins. I cause vomiting, diarrhoea and sometimes death. Annoyingly doctors can now cure me through re-hydration and antibiotics.

Poo

Hi, I don’t think I need any introductions as you probably see me every day. Did you know it is perfectly normally to poop as much three times a day or as little as three times a week? I loved 19th century Britain, there were no flushing toilets so we partied every night when all the human poops were collected together by night wastemen. We often squelched together and overflowed into the streets and rivers, eventually getting in the drinking water. Lovely!

Cholera patient

Hello, I’m not feeling very well. I’ve been drinking water from our local water pump and it has made me feel sick. I can’t get off the pot, it stinks and I feel so ill. My skin has turned a blue colour and I am having difficulty breathing. My family are trying to help by getting me fresh water from our water pump but they started being sick this morning…

Death 🙁

Welcome, I have many names such as Angel of Death or Grim Reaper but I prefer to simply be called Death. I think it summarises my purpose perfectly – which is to kill as many people as possible. I don’t need them to suffer first but I do need them to die. I do love a bit of disease and Cholera is one of my favourites. It was a huge killer around the world, particularly in the 19th century.
